There are a few general guidelines, but they are by no means set in stone. We typically consider cats seniors when they’re between 7 and 11 years old. With dogs, it all depends on their breed and size. Giant breeds often become seniors by 5 to 6 years of age, while 7 to 8 is when most large and medium-sized dogs become seniors. Toy breeds, like Chihuahuas, that can live up to 20 years, don’t become seniors until much later.
