Acupuncture Now Available At O’Halloran Hill

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion and manipulation of fine sterile needles into specific points on the body. The western approach to acupuncture concentrates on muscle and nerve pain.

In clinical trials at Glasgow Veterinary School (where Dr. Rachael trained in acupuncture) approximately 80% of animals responded to acupuncture without side effects.

What conditions can be treated?

  • Arthritis
  • Post-operative trauma
  • Chronic pain
  • Neurological issues such as spinal and nerve pain

What is a typical treatment like?

An initial appointment is 30-40 minutes so Dr. Rachael can get to know your pet’s individual situation. Most patients tolerate acupuncture well (some even find the treatment relaxing). We strive to have a relaxed atmosphere for these sessions and most owners are happy to stay with their pet. Bringing treats and familiar toys are encouraged if they will help your pet relax.

Follow up appointments will generally last 20 minutes. Normally patients receive 4 sessions in 4 weeks. After this, the sessions will be tapered to your pets individual needs.

Why choose acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an excellent alternative for pain relief. It can but used as a sole treatment, especially in animals that have side effects from medications, and can also be used alongside pain medications where patients need some extra help.
