Pets As Gifts

Pets as gifts is a beautiful idea. But have you honestly taken the time to think it through?

Through the joy, happiness, and excitement of Christmas and celebrations, I get why giving your loved one a pet as a gift sounds like a great idea. However, I urge you to read this before making an impulsive decision.

The harsh reality is, in the months after Christmas shelters are inundated with pets that were given as Christmas presents. A depressing increase of 15% of unwanted puppies and kittens are dumped in the weeks following Christmas and it’s time we make a change.

Before you open your heart and door welcoming a fur-baby into your life, please consider the following:

Do you have enough time?

You’ll need to provide mental and physical stimulation for your pet (no matter what you end up getting). Exercise is extremely important for the health and well-being of your pet. Do you have time to provide this? Are you likely to travel, move house, have a baby or change occupations in the near future? All these things will impact the decision on which pet you choose

Reputable breeder or Adoption

If going for a pure-bred, make sure you try to visit the breeding premises to ensure that the puppies or kittens were bred and cared for in a healthy environment. Breeders that are registered on the national register is your best decision in finding who to use. Be cautious about buying a pet over the internet – like anything else, you might not get what you bargained for!  Why not adopt a dog or cat from an animal shelter or the RSPCA? It costs less, all animals will have been through rigorous health and behavioural checks, and you’ll be offering an animal a second chance at a happy life.

Can you financially support all the needs your pet will have?

Don’t bury your head in the sand! Annual vaccinations, six monthly health checks, parasite preventions, routine and unexpected surgeries and dental treatments, nutrition, environment enrichment, microchipping, toys, treats, bedding and more. All the needs of your pet will add up and it is truly worth being prepared for the expense before rushing in. If your pet gets sick or requires a large surgery, are you in a position to be able to provide what it needs? Will you choose pet insurance? Or create a separate “pet account”?

Making the decision to become a pet parent is one of the most rewarding experiences you will have in life. Yes, at times, it will be frustrating, scary and emotional, but they will spend their lives providing you unconditional love, loyalty, emotional and mental support, laughter and company. The question is…… Will you do the same?
